Last night my MSFW partner in crime, Tez, and I and about 1,400 other ticket holders went to the stunningly beautiful inaugural Royal Botanic Runway, held funnily enough at the Royal Botanic Gardens. We braved the sweltering evening sun to see some of the most gorgeous fashion from Australian designers Collette Dinnigan, Martin Grant, Aurelio Costarella and Akira Isogawa.
The evening was held as a fundraiser for Stage 3 of the Botanic Gardens’ “turn off the tap” initiative, which will enable it to become drought-proof and eliminate the need to rely on potable water. It was a fabulous idea to have the gardens and all the native plants as the backdrop and runway to such a great event. As well as the runway show there was a Black Tie dinner auction after the main event and a Moonlight Cinema package, which being cheaper (and we being on the not so rich side) we chose.

My highlights were from the Dinnigan and Costarella collections, which were both ethereal and feminine and ever so pretty! There was lots of colour and floral touches everywhere. Also some impressive headpieces on display. I was very inspired by the whole evening and hope that this becomes a staple fixture in the Melbourne fashion scene.
What fashion event is complete without champagne?
Once the runway show was finished we headed over to the Moonlight Cinema section of the Gardens and waited for the sun to set to watch the funny and very interesting documentary Bill Cunningham New York. If you haven’t seen this it’s a must for any fashionista! Bill has a way of looking at fashion that is quite beautiful and thought provoking, and this is from a man who is 84 years old and still taking snaps for the New York Times!!
