Sunday Sessions; The Soundtrack to My Life – The Doors

the doorsHello, I love you, won’t you tell me your name?

In similar fashion to how I became obsessed with Elvis, in late high school my friends and I were fixated with Oliver Stone’s movie The Doors and passed around the VHS copy like it was contraband. For a good six months in 1996 you could have easily been mistaken it to be 1967 the way we carried on about the band and its bewitching and charismatic front man, Jim Morrison.

It may sound like a cliché but The Doors’ psychedelic, Californian, 60s vibe is so hypnotic and enthralling I can’t help but be sucked into their music and Jim’s poetry. Throughout university I got my hands on all their albums and became lost in their music. For me, they epitomise the 60s and, not for the first time in my life, made me wish I was born about 25 years earlier! To this day Jim Morrison is considered to be the archetypal rock star; a drug/alcohol fuelled sexy, mysterious, leather-clad crooner, and of course a member of the 27 Club.

You won’t be surprised to know that I made my girlfriends traipse halfway across Paris to find Père Lachaise Cemetery to find Jim’s grave. It feels like a million years ago and my memory is a bit hazy but I do remember it was hard to find and it was cordoned off as it was often vandalised. As with Graceland, visiting Jim’s grave was surreal as he was another rock legend that was larger than life and a “character” from pop culture, it was like real life crashing in.

Jim, the beautiful hippie!

I have to admit that this Sunday Sessions was the toughest one to pick a song for! Every time I thought I had a great tune for you I’d hear another that I absolutely love, GAH!! Today I’m sharing one of the goodies from the second album, Strange Days. Echo & The Bunnymen also do a great cover that I love, which is rare (originals are hard to beat I find!). If you dig this song I would definitely recommend getting yourself The Best of The Doors and indulge your inner hippie rocker. Happy Sunday and enjoy my man, MR MOJO RISIN’!

  1. We were lucky I suppose to visit the grave before it was cordoned off, and a very trippy vibe it was too! Jim was one of the most charismatic frontmen ever, LOVED this post!!!

Now it's your turn...let me know what you think. I love reading your comments! :)
