After a jam packed first week of our road trip we always knew that Palm Springs was going to be five days filled with LOADS of down time by the pool. Thankfully the weather didn’t disappoint with most days getting to 30°C/86°F = perfection!
I’d been looking forward to visiting Palm Springs as it was the getaway spot for Hollywood’s rich and famous. According to legend, actors under contract had to be available within two-hours from the studio just in case last minute film/photo shoots had to occur so Palm Springs was the perfect desert playground for them being less than an hour flight away. Think Frankie and Elvis back in the 60s and Leo today.
It’s also the hot spot for the Coachella music festival each year, where dozens of bloggers descend upon the town to wear flower crowns, pretend to know who’s playing and be utter posers.
DAY SEVEN: If you know anything about me you’ll know that I’m a HUUUGE Elvis fan and today we hit the fan jackpot; Elvis and Priscilla’s Palm Springs Honeymoon Hideaway, the house they lived in for a year after they first got married.
We had a great time touring around the house and checking out all the memorabilia. We even got to sit on the furniture which I couldn’t believe you could do! I made certain that I sat long and hard on Elvis’ bed (the very bed Lisa Marie was conceived in) hoping to rub some of his magic off on me.
That evening we made our way to the RetroRoom Lounge for karaoke and drag show fun. Talk about kitschy fabulousness!
Is that the ghost of Elvis looking down at me from the window??
Elvis carried Priscilla over the threshold behind us and straight upstairs – how romantic!
Yup, Elvis was totes naked in this tub – hubba hubba!
DAY EIGHT: Up early to drive Karen to LAX as unfortunately she was only with us for a week. Boo! Thankfully the traffic wasn’t as horrendous as it was the other day and we made it in plenty of time. On the way back to Palm Springs Tez and I stopped off at the Cabazon Outlet mall to console ourselves by shopping some awesome bargains (perhaps I picked up a pair of pink Nine West boots for a steal!).
Back at the hotel it was all about that pool life as we lounged and read and soaked up all of that beautiful vitamin D! Dinner that night was at a fabulous Mexican restaurant called Las Casuelas Terraza, where we toasted our huge margaritas to Karen and our great first week.
DAY NINE: I’d read about the delicious menu at Cheeky’s and how there was always a queue to get in but to persevere as it was definitely worth the wait, AND IT WAS! First off, real coffee – HUZZAH! It was so exquisite I just had to order another one to savour that amazingness. I ate the brekkie quesadilla and I was in egg heaven, simply delectable.
After breakfast we drove by the Instagram famous #ThatPinkDoor and checked out Frank Sinatra’s P.S. party pad. I was definitely digging all the mid-century modern, yet über retro architecture.
Then it was more time spent by the pool before dinner at Bill’s Pizza.
DAY TEN: Talk about adventure! A big day started off with a fab breakfast at King’s Highway at the Ace Hotel. Again, this is where all the bloggers stay during Coachella (all complimentary of course!) and before coming to Palm Springs I really wanted to stay here too (FOMO!) but once I saw it wasn’t very close to all the action I’m glad we didn’t (no, really!!)
Then it was off to the Aerial Tramway, the largest rotating cable car in the world, which glides 8000+ feet up Mount San Jacinto to the peak. Y’all know I hate heights and this was truly a white knuckle ride! On the way down I was brave enough to open my eyes and even take a selfies (yay me!).
Next stop was Joshua Tree National Park where, I shit you not, U2 came on the radio as we got back into the car!! Gorgeous scenery every where and blue sky as far as the eye can see.
Seeing as it was our last night in Palm Springs it would have been rude not to hit up the pool one last time before indulging in more Mexican food (*ahem* margaritas) at La Bonita’s.
Nothing but blue skies for miles…
Next week… Las Vegas!
